5 Ways to Prevent Wind Storm Damaged Trees

Wind storm damaged trees can occur when a tree is subjected to higher-than-normal wind loads — pushed or pulled excessively in different directions, causing branches to break or the entire tree to fail. Wind damage is common in areas prone to strong winds, such as waterfront regions and open farm fields — both of which are abundant throughout Simcoe County.

Signs of Wind Storm Damage

Several signs indicate a tree may have sustained wind damage. These include broken branches, a canopy that appears to be leaning or tilted, bark that has been stripped or torn, and roots that have been exposed or pulled from the ground.

If a tree has sustained wind damage, it's important to assess the extent of the damage quickly and determine whether the tree can be saved or needs to be removed. If the damage is minimal and the tree is otherwise healthy, it may be possible to repair it by removing broken branches and providing structural support. However, if the damage is severe or the tree was already unhealthy, removal is often the safest course of action to prevent further property damage or injury.

5 Ways to Protect Your Trees from Wind Storm Damage

  1. Plant in sheltered locations. When possible, plant trees where they will receive natural protection from wind — in a sheltered area or on the leeward side of a building or windbreak.
  2. Prune regularly. Remove damaged, diseased, or dead branches before a storm hits. Weak branches dramatically increase the risk of failure under wind load.
  3. Support young trees. Use stakes or guy wires to support newly planted trees while their root systems establish. Remove supports once the tree is stable to avoid girdling.
  4. Avoid planting wind-susceptible species in exposed areas. Some species tolerate wind better than others. If you have an exposed waterfront or field property, talk to a certified arborist about species selection before planting.
  5. Have trees assessed by a qualified arborist. An arborist can identify decay, structural defects, or other conditions that significantly increase the risk of failure during a storm — often before any visible symptoms appear.

If you notice that a tree has been damaged by wind, address it as soon as possible. Severely damaged trees may need emergency removal, while others can be restored through careful pruning. At Axe & Wedge Tree Works, we provide emergency storm response across Simcoe County. It's always best to talk to a certified arborist about any concerns you have about the potential for wind storm damaged trees on your property.
