How to Find a Good Tree Removal Company: 6 Things to Check

Tree work attracts a disproportionate number of unqualified operators. The low barrier to entry — a chainsaw, a truck, and some basic equipment — means that 'tree guys' range from highly trained certified arborists to completely untrained individuals who represent a serious liability risk to your property. Here's how to tell the difference.

1. Ask for ISA Certification

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification is the gold standard for tree care professionals. It requires passing a comprehensive exam and ongoing continuing education. Ask any company you're considering whether they employ ISA Certified Arborists, and ask to see the credentials. A company that can't produce them is not a professional arborist operation.

2. Verify Insurance — Specifically Liability and WSIB

Ask for a Certificate of Insurance showing general liability coverage (minimum $2 million for residential work) and WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) coverage for all workers. If a worker is injured on your property and the company doesn't have WSIB, you can be held liable. Don't take their word for it — ask for documentation.

3. Get Everything in Writing

A reputable tree service will provide a written quote that specifies what work will be done, how debris will be disposed of, and what the cost includes. Be very cautious of verbal quotes or vague proposals. Written documentation protects both parties and ensures there are no surprises when the invoice arrives.

4. Check Google Reviews — and Look at How They Respond

Online reviews are a reasonable proxy for consistent service quality. Look for companies with a substantial number of reviews (50+) and a high average rating. Pay attention to how the company responds to negative reviews — professional responses to criticism signal a company that takes customer service seriously.

5. Ask About Cleanup

A professional crew will leave your property clean. Ask specifically whether stump grinding is included, how wood and brush will be disposed of (chipped on-site, hauled away, or left for you), and whether there are additional charges for debris removal. Surprises on this front are a common source of frustration.

6. Be Wary of Door-to-Door Solicitation and Unusually Low Bids

Companies that knock on doors offering to do tree work cheaply — especially after storms — are frequently unlicensed, uninsured, and performing low-quality work. An unusually low bid is almost always explained by one of three things: no insurance, no proper equipment, or work that won't be done to a professional standard. The cost of fixing improperly done tree work is almost always higher than the savings.
