Not every structurally compromised tree needs to come down. Many valuable, mature trees can be preserved for decades with properly installed cabling and bracing systems that supplement their natural structure. Axe & Wedge Tree Works installs industry-standard dynamic and static cabling systems to reduce the risk of failure in trees that have structural weaknesses but remain otherwise healthy and worth saving.

The most common candidates for cabling are trees with co-dominant stems — two or more main trunks of roughly equal size growing from a single base. Co-dominant unions are inherently weaker because included bark between the stems creates a fault point that can split under wind, snow, or ice load. A properly installed high-strength cable between the two stems dramatically reduces the likelihood of failure.

Bracing rods are threaded steel rods installed through cracked or split crotches and weak branch attachments to mechanically hold the tree together at points of existing damage. Used in combination with cabling, bracing can stabilize trees that have already begun to split, preventing further separation and allowing the tree to compartmentalize the wound.

All cabling and bracing installations follow ANSI A300 Part 3 standards. We provide annual inspection service to ensure hardware remains properly tensioned and the tree has not grown around the attachment points, with a written inspection report after each visit.
